Serpentine belts are regularly serviced and replaced when necessary
- Service life and mileage:Most serpentine belts have a life span of 50,000 to 100,000km. Even if there is no visible wear and tear, replacement is recommended if your vehicle has reached this mileage range or if the belt has been in use for more than five years.
- Abnormal noise: If your engine starts or runs with a screeching, harsh noise, it may be a sign that the serpentine belt is worn, loose, or slipping on the pulleys.
- Damaged or worn belt surfaces: Watch for signs of cracks, wear, breaks or missing rubber on the serpentine belt surface. If you find these conditions, it’s time to replace the belt.

The structure of the serpentine belt includes:
- Fabric cover: protects the internal structure of the serpentine belt from damage.
- Tensile member: responsible for transmitting power and maintaining the dimensional stability of the belt.
- Adhesive rubber: Used to firmly bond the tensile member to the other rubber layers, which improves the durability and stability of the overall structure.
- Synthetic rubber ribs: Provide flexibility to the belt and friction with the pulleys.
Although serpentine belts and timing belts are relatively common drive belts, they are used for different purposes.
- Serpentine belt: Responsible for driving alternators, power steering pumps, and other accessories to keep these engine parts running properly.
- Timing belt: Responsible for synchronising the camshaft and crankshaft. Makes the intake and exhaust valves of the engine open or close at the correct moment.
When you look at the grooves in the belt, you can easily tell the difference. Timing belts have teeth on the inside designed to precisely engage the camshaft and crankshaft to prevent slippage. Serpentine belts have multiple V-shaped ribs for increased friction with the pulleys of each part.
Common causes of serpentine belt breaks are:
- Aging and Wear: When serpentine belts are used for a long time, the belts will gradually age due to friction, high temperatures and repeated bending, and the rubber will become brittle and crack, eventually leading to breakage.
- Tensioner or Pulley Failure: If the pulley bearings are damaged or wobbly, this can cause uneven force or excessive friction on the serpentine belt, which can break.
- Improper or Misaligned Belt Installation: Serpentine belts that are not properly aligned or are not properly tensioned can easily cause belt edges to fray, slip or even break quickly.
- Abnormal tensioning force: Tensioners that are too tight or too loose will affect the life of the serpentine belt. Over-tensioning will stretch, deform or even break the belt. If the tensioner is too loose, it is easy to slip and jump teeth.
- Foreign object entry: If foreign objects such as stones, sand, etc. are involved in the pulley, they will directly cut or damage the serpentine belt.
- Belt quality problems: Poor quality serpentine belts or defective serpentine belts are prone to early breakage.
